Hugely Overrated

I read it years ago and couldn’t remember much about it, so this is my second read. I think it is hugely overrated. I would have described the travel experiences in much greater detail, to where the reader felt like they were there. Rather than being drawn into the scene being described, I always was conscious of here is a writer trying to describe his experience and not doing a very good job at it.

I walk away from this book feeling cheated by spending so much time trying to finish it, and feeling disgust and contempt for the main characters. They are selfish, self absorbed, and hedonistic. Let’s bum around the country, partying, getting, drunk, getting high, and getting laid whenever we can, seeking out good jazz wherever we can find it. Sometimes working ,but when we are in a pinch, when we run out of money, let’s wire a relative to bail us out. Let me be irresponsible, because I always have the safety net that the responsible people in my life will provide. Yet, the main characters like to pride themselves on their free-thinking, independent spirit.

It is such a shallow existence, and yet they all feel themselves to be so enlightened. No search for a greater meaning to life. No contribution to the lives they touch, only taking from everyone they encounter. People, places, and things are just there to be used for their pleasure. Taking, taking, taking, me, me, me. Despicable, selfish characters all. Does this describe the Beat Generation? It is much like the hippy generation of my day.

I liked 'On the Road.'

It is, first, very well-written, with a clever, stylized narrative and some sly humor; the writing is, I thought, appropriate for the book's pell-mell feel while managing to remain coherent and easy to read. Likewise, the book presents an enjoyable story, with a memorable cast of characters and a pleasing variety of places. And, of course, 'On the Road' is every bit the classic travelogue, of the superior kind, which entertains and tantalizes as it establishes a functional sense of place; throughout the text, I found myself being "transported," in that way so hard to achieve in any medium.

There is, however, another dimension to 'On the Road': a psychological study. Namely, we are propelled into the psyches of the author and Mr. Neal Cassady, by way of their semi-fictional counterparts and their antic adventures. In this way, the book explores the drives, neuroses, and contradictions of these individuals, which sometimes wax psychotic and predatory; for me, it brought to mind the Biblical "double-minded man," who is "unstable in all his ways." Yet, interestingly, the men regularly proclaim profound truths and demonstrate rare wisdom (or so I believe, at least); it suggests that, yes, the double-minded man tends towards instability, but is not necessarily wrong in his assertions, nor invalid in his tendencies. All in all, the story of Mr. Kerouac and Mr. Cassady's travels raises many a human question, and much can be learned from it.

Perfect gift for an adventurous traveler

I bought this book for my son as a last minute Christmas present. He is a traveler at heart and is hoping to do some longer out of the country type trips. He absolutely loved this book and didn't put it down until he was done. It only took a few days for him to finish it. I'm betting that when he hits the road he'll bring this book with him. It is a great purchase for anyone with wanderlust and a must read!!
