I wanted to learn more about Arabella Huntington. This booklet mentioned her maybe twice. It is a great quick read if you want to visit the Huntington Library. If you already know the history of the house, pass on this.

Lee Chan sees Broadway through a Keyhole

Charlie Chan (Warner Oland) and Number One son, Lee (Keye Luke) are on a cruise to New York. A sly man, Thomas Mitchell (Marc Lawrence), sneaks into a woman's hotel room while she is in the bathroom. Billie (Louise Henry) realizes she can't get out. A chair is under the doorknob. Thomas is still looking through her things. She starts yelling for a steward. Thomas runs into the hall to his door, just as Charlie and Lee appear to go to the woman's room. Charlie and Lee free the woman from the bathroom. That man was definately looking for something that Billie may have stolen herself.
After the Chan's leave, Billie finds the mystery package hidden under a drawer. She goes to the Chan's room and starts to small talk with Lee and askes for aspirin.
As Lee leaves the room, Billie hides the mystery package in his drawer. Lee comes back and gives her an aspirin.
Charlie and Lee arrive safely in New York. Seems like nobody is happy to see Billie back in town.
Later that night at the Hottentot Club, Billie and Johnny (Douglas Fowley), the club owner, have an argument. Billie pulls a gun on Johnny. He tries to take it from her. Seconds later, Marie (Joan Woodbury) enters the room.
Charlie Chan is told at the dinner, his son is being held as a suspect. Billie has been murdered. The Chief of Police, James Nelson (Harold Huber) and Chan are on the case right away.

Also in the cast: Joan Marsh, J. Edward Bromberg, Donald Woods, Leon Ames, Toshia Mori, Charles Williams, Eugene Borden, Lon Chaney Jr, Lester Dorr, Chuck Hamilton, Philip Morris, Cyril Ring, Gloria Roy, Harry Strang.

Fun Detective Story with Surprise Ending!

Another great detective film by Twentieth Century Fox with Warren Oland as Charlie Chan and Key e Luke (remember "Kung Fu"?) as number one son Lee.

Unlike other Chan films that had some pretty bad racist stereotypes, this film stuck to the story at hand. The story involves Billie Bronson who has a big secret that could "blow the lid off" the secret goings on of the gangsters of Broadway.

The banter between Charlie and his son is what makes these films so fun. They are on a boat going to NYC and Charlie is a bit seasick. Son Lee is bragging about all the food that his father just missed out on. When Charlie says stop, Lee asks if he needs a remedy. "Only cure is to find land", says Chan.

Billie comes into town who has info that is "hot enough to blister" and deals with a few nervous gangsters and a couple of reporters - of course we have the usually snarky female reporter and her sidekick smarty male reporter for the New York Bulletin, whose editor is also a bit involved in the case.

The viewer is lead on quite a merry go round on this film. It's not until we hit the 30 minute mark that Billie actually gets killed.

About 15 minutes into the film, a very brief uncredited cameo by Lon Chaney, Jr.!

And the murderer is quite a surprise. I had zero suspicion until the end of the film where they put all the facts together. These old films usually end with all suspects in a single room where we hash things out.
The film gets into forensics too with the "paraffin test", looking for gunpowder marks on hands. This was quite cool for 1939, but with today's detective & cop shows, this might not seem so hot to today's modern view.

Bottom Line: Love the banter, the hilarious New York cracks and commentaries, on everything from Chinese cigarette girls to camera hounds (worse than newspaper reporters). Must-see for any Chan fan.

A fun mystery

This very funny 1937 Charlie Chan case stars Warner Oland, in his final year in this role. Although beginning to suffer from overwork, he performs very well. See my review of Charlie Chan at the Circus for some information about this non-Chinese actor playing the famed Honolulu detective.

While on board ship, sailing to New York with Number One son, a woman hides her diary in Chan's suitcase to stop a man from stealing it from her. The diary contains information about criminals, information that would lead to long prison sentences. After arriving in NY, she is murdered and Number One son is briefly accused of her murder because, as always, he thinks that he is able to help his famed father, but ends up in ridiculous, and for us funny, situations. Viewers will enjoy how Chan solves the murder case and the humor that pervades the film.

As usual, the film is filled with Chan-ian epigrams, such as: Camera remembers things human eyes forget. No poison more deadly than ink. Murder is like revolving door, when one side close, other side open. Woman's intuition is better than ten scientists.

In the short space of a few pages, Hubbard gives us a fun, adventuresome character in Blacky Lee and if you are a fan of the sort of hijinx that occur in the OCEAN'S ELEVEN movies or Hitchcock's TO CATCH A THIEF then you're going to feel right at home with your feet curled right next to the fire with this story. Long on wit, short on fat, IRON DUKE is a movie that hasn't happened yet--but should. I would cast George Clooney in the lead with the Coen Bros. as the directing-producing team. This is a story that plays into all their sensibilities and period piece excellence.

I urge all my readers to pick this one up and give it a try. If I were to find fault with any of it, it would be that the story is too short. A small nit to pick to be sure in a story that features con games, sword fights, train escapes, royal politics, humor and romance. --Pulp 2.0

Witty, sharp story

I really enjoy stories that are told slightly OFF of the main character's viewpoint. You get all the mystery of the plot while watching it unfold, without knowing exactly what the end game of the lead character is. A lot of this story is told from the Iron Duke's hapless assistant, who looks on in horror at the reckless improvisations of Blacky Lee that only get more elaborate as the story moves along. You keep expecting the whole house of cards to collapse on his head...
Good times. :)

What an Amazing Romp!

The story of the scoundrel, cad & schemer that makes you wonder when he's going to get hoist on his own petard (fall victim to one of his own traps!) takes such irreverent twists and turns that you simply CAN'T stop listening to it or reading it.

One of the most delightful bits is that Blackie really is a NEAR total handsome devil scoundrel that women can't resist, self-confident-verging-on-arrogant cad. His sidekick keeps trying to get Blackie to grow a conscience with no success......

I love the fact that the roles of the white hat / black hat / innocent bystander get swapped around so thoroughly. After I finished the story, I reflected in the satisfied glow of a great read that L Ron Hubbard had actually slipped in such insightful commentary on the nature of what constituted a good government.

It's different, it's fun, it has aspects that one doesn't expect, and one can be refreshed and rejuvenated by it.

I had an opportunity to read a great many of the stories that Galaxy Press is bringing back out. Every single one of the stories that I read stood on it's own admirably. The similarity was only in the entertainment value and quality of writing.

Amazing Performance!

L. Ron Hubbard has written some of my favorite books, but that completely aside, the performance on the audio book version is simply amazing! I have never heard audio books like the Stories from the Golden Age collection. They have a full cast of voice actors, sound effects, and ambient sound, and it is unbelievably engrossing. I hope other audio books take this method to heart because the quality here blows away everything else I have ever heard!

Galaxy Press also puts on live performances, and these are really fun, too!
